OUR HISTORY
1978
Paul Routledge sets up on his own in Horsham as Routledge & Co. and latterly acquired a local practice to further grow the business.
1980s
John Holman joined Paul as a Partner of the business and they moved into Anova House, where the firm remained until June 2020 when it relocated to The Barn in Faygate.
1990s
Two Partners became four Partners as the business continued to grow through it’s excellent local reputation. There was also a name change to Routledge Taylor.
2000s
Simon Hoy and Walter Benzie acquired Routledge Taylor and renamed it Anova. Got you to the top of the phone book in those days!
You might be interested to know that Simon and, the late, Walter have known each other since they were 9 years old as they went to school together. And why did they become accountants? Their friend’s father drove a Rolls Royce. And he was an Accountant.
…sadly times have changed!
2019
Having founded a firm in 2017, Matt Cleghorn came across Simon and Walter by chance when a recruitment agent put him in contact as they were looking to their succession.
Immediately seeing a fit in culture and vision in Anova with his existing business, Matt contacted Phil Sleight knowing his tax experience and approach to advising clients would make him a perfect business partner. Luckily, Phil agreed!
And, we’re pleased to say that Simon continues as a Consultant to this day.
2022
Anova continue their expansion in Sussex through a merger with a Brighton based practice which was first established in 1995 by Robert (Bob) Gogarty. Bob’s excellent sense of humour was what first struck Anova Partners, Matt & Phil, which is an important element to their own style as it can help clients and staff, alike, engage in what can sometimes be rather dry topics!
Bob can occasionally be found in our Brighton office cracking some of his old favourites… why did the auditor cross the road….??

Matt has over 15 years’ experience of working with owner managed businesses, larger audit clients and charities. Covering a broad range of sectors, Matt brings his experience to advise clients on business strategy, tax planning and profit extraction. Outside of work Matt is a father of two energetic boys and (when he can escape) enjoys cycling, running, tennis and golf.

Phil is a Chartered Tax Adviser with over 10 years’ experience having previously worked at EY and KPMG. He advises businesses on various aspects such as profit extraction, employee incentivisation, R&D claims, international tax and exit planning. He also advises property developers and investors on tax structuring and capital allowance claims. Outside of work, Phil enjoys playing football, good food and spending time with his young family.
KATIE SQUIRE
ASSOCIATE PARTNER
Katie joined Anova in October 2021 having completed AAT and ACCA, becoming fully qualified in 2012. She has over 15 years’ experience working in the accountancy practice sector. Katie advises mainly owner managed businesses in a wide variety of industries; she particularly enjoys providing VAT advice and accounting solutions to facilitate her clients’ requirements. She also takes responsibility for managing our charity and larger audit clients. Outside of the office, Katie is a mum to two girls and enjoys baking and watching football.
